Oil Ring Main Units (K-Range)


ACTOM MV Switchgear locally manufactures a range of extensible and non-extensible oil filled ring main units. The K-Range is suitable for both free standing indoor and outdoor application as well as in mini-substations.

SF6 Ring Main Units (RMV)


ACTOM MV Switchgear, through its technology partnership with LSE, supplies  the RMV range of extensible and non-extensible, SF6 insulated ring main units.  The units have been type tested to IEC 62271 international standards, thus ensuring long-life with minimal maintenance and trouble-free service. Specific attention in both the design and testing has been devoted to ensure maximum practicable operator safety under normal operating and abnormal fault conditions.

Miniature/Compact Substations (Minisubs)


ACTOM MV Switchgear is a leading manufacturer of miniature substations. Our units have been developed over many years as a cost effective method of reticulating power to residential, industrial and development areas where the essential components are combined in a single robust enclosure suitable for outdoor applications. Miniature substations generally

consist of a steel enclosure housing an MV ring main switch, a stepdown transformer and a low voltage distribution compartment. The units are customised to suite a client’s specific requirements. The miniature substations are also available in a high risk version, manufactured of 6mm steel with protected and or electronic locking. All our units are type tested to the latest local and international standards to ensure performance as well as public and operator safety.

Bulk Metering Units/Metering Units


ACTOM MV Switchgear is a local manufacturer of outdoor bulk metering units (BMU’s) complying with NRS 099 and indoor air insulated free standing metering units. Our units have been developed as a cost effective method of reticulating power to residential, industrial and development areas where a specific requirement for metering exists. BMU’s generally consist of a steel enclosure housing an MV ring main switch, a MV metering compartment housing CT’s and VT’s  and MV consumer connection compartment. The BMU’s are also available in a high risk version, manufactured of 6mm steel with protected and or electronic locking. All our units are type tested to the latest local and international standards to ensure performance as well as public and operator safety. The free standing metering units are designed for indoor application consisting of in and out cable boxes with type “C” interface as well as a metering chamber housing the CT’s and VT’s.

Pad Mounted Transformer Kiosks (PTK)


ACTOM Medium-Voltage Switchgear offers pad mounted transformer kiosk (PTK) type compact substations, designed and manufactured in accordance with IEC 62271-202, for the purpose of wind and solar generation applications. A PTK typically consists of the following components and can be customised to suit the user's requirements and specification.

  • An internal arc classified (IAC) medium-voltage (MV) compartment containing a 36 kV gas insulated 2-way, 3-way or 4-way ring main unit (RMU).
  • A 36 kV RMU with a circuit breaker function (i.e. fitted with self-powered protection relay) connecting via fully screened XLPE-insulated cables and plug-in Type 4 screened separable connectors to SANS 876 to the transformer.
  • A 33 kV / LV transformer with ratings up to 3.4 MVA. (Higher ratings available upon request)
  • A combination of flexible and solid copper busbars used to connect from the transformer secondary side bushings to the LV ASSEMBLY i.e. low-voltage circuit breaker (optional) and busbar assembly.
  • Low-voltage busbar assembly suitable for connection of up to 14 x single-core cables per phase.
  • An LV / 230 V auxiliary transformer (optional) for AC distribution within the PTK.
  • All of the above equipment is contained in a housing manufactured from galvanised mild steel and/or 3CR12 that allows access to the equipment for operation and maintenance.

    E-House/Containerised Solutions


    ACTOM Medium-Voltage Switchgear offers turnkey E-house or containerised substation solutions. Together with our approved container/enclosure suppliers we offer package substation that eliminates the need for erecting a building on site. The package substations can be customised and manufactured to suite all MV applications. The substations are supplied complete with MV equipment, LV auxiliary equipment, battery tripping units and communication systems. All products in our Indoor offering can be incorporated into these substations.
